Hyalite is a special variety of opal which is colourless. It grows in volcanic formations. Although these stones do not show the normal typical opalescence you see from an Opal, they have their own unique character which is fluorescence. Hyalite contains trace amounts of uranium within its silica structure, causing it to glow bright green when under ultraviolet (black light) which is very rare in the mineral kingdom. Each specimen will have some area of grape-like botryoidal growth and range in translucence from clear to milky or gold colouring and can be found within a matrix of Basalt rock or Chalcedony Agate.
