Fire opal is well known to be sourced from Mexico and is mined in the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Julisio, Michoacan, Queretaro and San Luis Potosi.
Various Opals from Mexico contain a bluish or golden internal sheen which is known as Mexican water opal or hydrophanous opal, rather than as Mexican fire opal. Cantera opal is the common name used for fire opal that has been cut with its host rock intact.
